ELEVAGE: In 2015 we made a dry riesling from Elizabeth’s Vineyard and, while good, it lacked the zing we expect from Finger Lakes riesling. We bottled the wine in 2016 and decided to wait and see if it would come around, as they often do. In 2017 we made a small amount of gamay noir but went a little too light on the sulfite. Consequently bottles tended to oxidize after just an hour or two of air. Finally, in spring of 2019, we got the brilliant idea to blend these two misfits together into a “rose,” add a little sugar and let it sparkle. Throw in a few long lost cases of fizzy 2010 chardonnay with questionable caps and there you have it, Rock Valley Rose.

TASTING NOTE: Chalky nose with delicate strawberry and lime aromas. Fine bubbles, dry, mineral driven in the mouth with a clean, chalky finish.

ELIZABETH'S VINEYARD: Located in Hector, New York on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, this twenty-seven acre vineyard is composed of shallow loam soil over shale on a slope leading to some of the lake's deepest waters. Among the pinot noir, cabernet franc and riesling, grower John Leidenfrost also maintains blocks of spur pruned cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay over a quarter century old. This vineyard's privileged exposure and thin, shale laden soil produces wine of great depth and backbone.
